The Arctic's innovative future at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2022

For three days various aspects of the Russian Arctic's further development have been discussed at the stand "The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue" of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic at the 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. At the session, representatives of the Russian Geographical Society, the Research institute of transport and transport construction, the State Oceanographic Institute, the Melnikov Permafrost Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Applied Geophysics of Academician E.K.Fedorov, the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Arctic Technologies, MIPT exchanged scientific opinions on environmental, industrial, tourist, economic risks and opportunities of the Arctic.

The features and opportunities of the International Arctic Station "Snowflake” were also the topic of discussions and the Executive Director of the Institute of Arctic Technologies MIPT Yury Vasiliev outlined the project’s plans.

"Snowflake" is the premier Arctic test site for launching new technologies. The Snowflake project was endorsed by all Arctic countries in June 2020 and included in the work of the Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council. We continue working on the Station, and the 1st stage launch (in test operation) is scheduled for the end of 2024.”, said Yury Vasiliev.
